Manufacturer: Roche
Pharmaceutical name: Capecitabine
Pack: 10 pills (500 mg)
Xeloda (Capecitabine) is utilized for cancer treatment. It acts as a pro-drug, converting into the cytotoxic compound 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). 5-FU is produced in tumors with the assistance of thymidine phosphorylase, thereby minimizing its systemic effect on healthy tissues. This medication is prescribed for breast cancer, as well as colon or rectal cancer—including metastatic cases—particularly those types that are resistant to paclitaxel and anthracyclines.
Xeloda is taken orally, generally twice a day in the morning and evening or as your physician prescribes. It is recommended to take it with a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters) within 30 minutes following a meal. Capecitabine is typically administered daily for 2 weeks, followed by a 1-week break. This cycle can be repeated as advised by your healthcare provider. If you are using any antacid products containing aluminum or magnesium, take capecitabine 2 hours before or after the antacids to avoid affecting its absorption. The dosage is determined by your health condition, body size, and reaction to treatment.
While taking Xeloda, it is essential to use effective birth control methods. Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney issues, a history of coronary artery disease, or if you are receiving treatment with folic acid, anticoagulants, phenytoin, or leucovorin. Your doctor may require regular blood tests during your Xeloda treatment, so do not miss any scheduled appointments. Be cautious when driving or operating machinery, as this medication may cause dizziness or fainting.
Contact your doctor right away if you experience severe side effects such as intense vomiting or diarrhea, abdominal pain, stomatitis, constipation, epigastric pain, dyspepsia, dry mouth, flatulence, appetite loss, oral thrush, elevated bilirubin levels, pain or redness in your hands or feet, fever or flu-like symptoms, jaundice, angina, sudden numbness or weakness, fainting, severe itching, dehydration, swelling in the limbs, or difficulty breathing. Patients over the age of 80 may be at a higher risk of experiencing side effects from Xeloda.
